Which Mayonnaise Should You Buy at the Store?

Recently a reader asked, “which mayonnaise should you buy?”, since everything at the store is made with rotten and dangerous soybean oil or canola oils – both terrible choices.  Click here to read about WHY to avoid these industrial vegetable oils.

I've also struggled with this in the past when trying to find a good mayo. I was all excited to find an organic olive oil mayo at the store once, then looked closer at the ingredients and that one is mostly soybean oil, too!  (You can tell by what is listed first on the ingredient label, ingredients are always listed in order of the most to the least.)

Which mayonnaise should you buy?  Here are your best options:

  • You could make your own — Here's my homemade mayo recipe, it seriously only takes about 3 minutes!

  • OR, if you just don’t think you would make this mayo recipe, or sometimes need an even quicker option, here’s the only kind of mayo I'll buy and it's pretty tasty too!

Is “Just Mayo” okay? It was on the Amazon list you linked. The first ingredient is non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil.

Dezarae Thomas — I’ll have to go check that link again! I’d say that mayo is a smidge better, but not much, and the others I mention in the post are MUCH better. Okay I just checked and that link isn’t working right, I’ll fix it, thank you!

Toasted sesame oil is not suitable for mayo base oil. Its used in asian dishes for flavour. oil from untoasted sesame seeds is available (mostly at health food stores) and it is mild enough to use in quantity. Still – get cold pressed best quality you can afford.

      Hi Debbie,
We usually go through ours pretty quickly, but it will keep about 2 weeks in the frig, longer if you add the whey.

OH you meant the NOT homemade mayo? For that I can’t remember, but I know it lasts at least a month or so, probably longer.

    Hi Anna,
Safflower is icky, too, though. Check this out: https://www.westonaprice.org/The-Skinny-on-Fats.html then search for “safflower” on that page.

I’ve been on the quest for better mayonnaise recently and just noticed this post. Does anyone use the Hain Safflower mayo? I bought some, its good, and if I remember correctly they say its an acceptable store bought choice in Eat Fat Lose Fat. At least it has no soybean / canola oil.

Try smelling it or taking a taste, I’ll bet it will be fine.

I was getting ready to make my own mayonnaise, but was unsure about the sesame oil. I purchased expeller pressed “toasted” sesame oil. Is all sesame oil from toasted sesame seeds? It is amber in color and I’ve used it sparingly in Asian dishes. I think it may be too strong for mayo, but I will try it , if this is the correct kind.

The organic Wilderness Families mayo shown above is really great. I order mine through the Grain and Salt Society. We have a link to them on the Go Shopping page of our website. However, one of my goals this summer is to make my own. I have some used Julia Childs cookbooks I bought from half.com and would like to try it. I am concerned about the strong olive oil flavor, as well.

Has anyone experimented more with this? I just added an update to the post, let me know if you find a great recipe, thanks!

Yes, that’s the mayo I was writing about in the post.

I checked on Azure Standard today – they don’t deliver here (Michigan) and to have things shipped is a huge price. If they ship to your state they might be a better deal, but you’d have to be sure to check the prices out carefully.

    Thanks, Kelly

I know what you mean, my palate is very sensitive to strong olive oil flavors, too.

I’d love to hear from someone who has tried the Eat Fat Lose Fat recipe…?

    Thanks Jessica!

You could also make your own using the Mary’s Oil Blend Mayo recipe on the Eat Fat, Lose Fat Web site. I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve heard it’s good. I have tried the NT Mayo recipe and it was too olive-oily for my taste.
